Meals on Wheels Celebrates “March for Meals'“ 2020
The month of March mobilizes hundreds of local Meals on Wheels programs across the country to reach out to their communities and build the support that will enable them to serve America’s seniors all year long. The 18th annual March for Meals campaign gives the businesses, organizations, governments and volunteers who contribute so generously in their communities an opportunity to support homebound seniors in a variety of ways to make America stronger and healthier.
On March 22, 1972, President Richard Nixon signed into law a measure that amended the Older Americans Act of 1965 and established a national nutrition program for seniors 60 years and older. For more than 45 years, these critical programs – commonly referred to as Meals on Wheels – have delivered more than just nutritious meals to homebound seniors in virtually every community across the country. And, the dedicated staff and volunteers who deliver these meals each week provide a vital lifeline and connection to the community, which are sometimes all it takes to keep our senior neighbors at home, where they want to be.
How you can help
Meals on Wheels of Lee’s Summit has delivered more than 500,000 meals to seniors in our community since 1974. Meals on Wheels of Lee’s Summit is 100% volunteer-run. Financial donations help make the healthy meals possible, and also pay for the environmentally friendly, reusable food trays and covers.
We’re also always looking for volunteers to prepare and deliver meals. If interested in helping out, call 816-743-4400 or visit our volunteer page.
